In recent decades, we have witnessed a significant change, with women bursting onto the wine scene with passion, knowledge and determination, leaving their mark at every stage of the process, from the vineyard to the glass.
In many countries, women face legal restrictions on owning land or businesses, which limited their ability to own wineries or vineyards. In addition, gender stereotypes and social norms made it difficult for them to access more prominent roles in this industry.
However, women have always been present in the wine industry,
With the aim of giving them greater visibility and voice, various associations and networks of women in the wine industry have been created, such as the Asociación de Mujeres del Vino in Spain, and Women in Wine in the United States, to mention a few.
In 2022 Angostina Astegiano (winemaker at Casa de Quesada), Bibiana Parra (marketing director at Tomemos Vino) and Joana Vallejo (sommelier), three enterprising women and wine lovers, decided to found Mujeres in Taninos (MIT) in Mexico.
This non-profit organization has more than 180 members including winemakers, sommeliers, businesswomen, importers, distributors, educators and chefs, all with a single purpose: to promote gender equality in the wine industry.
The mission of the MIT is clear: to promote the growth and empowerment of its members through knowledge, sound and innovation, with the aim of building the largest network of women in the wine industry. To this end, it has three subcommittees, technical, commercial, marketing and communication, whose function will be to provide more solid tools to all its members, as well as to improve sales techniques:
Commercial subcommittee: Its function will be to provide the most solid tools to improve sales techniques, as well as to create spaces by and for the MITs, such as expos and bazaars, in which all of them will be able to offer their services. This subcommittee is headed by Bibiana Parra.
Technical subcommittee: Agostina Astegiano will be in charge of this subcommittee. Its objective is to incorporate knowledge, where they can be updated on new developments and processes in the industry.
Marketing and Communication subcommittee: It will aim at innovative strategies to reach the final consumer; Joanna Vallejo will be in charge of this committee.
The main purposes of MIT include:
- Promoting gender equality in the wine sector
- Promote education and capacity through workshops and specialized courses
- Create events and forums to make female talent visible and promote projects led by women
- Guarantee a strong and coherent voice in the wine industry in Mexico and soon in other countries
- Promote the growth and planned evolution of wine in the country
- Build a database with relevant and up-to-date information for the industry
- Providing consumers with unique experiences, designed and executed by women.
Mujeres In Taninos is not just an organization, but a game-changing movement. As its community expands, so does its impact, ensuring that more women find their place, their voice and their leadership in Mexico's wine industry.
