Would you and your staff members know what to do if a customer covertly ordered an Angel Shot? It is important that you do — because knowing how to respond could prevent a crime from happening!
“An Angel Shot is a drink order made by a customer to inform a bartender that they are in an unsafe situation and need assistance,” explains information from TIPS (Training for Intervention ProcedureS), a leader in education and training for the responsible service, sale, and consumption of alcohol. “A customer asking for an angel shot indicates that they need help but do not feel comfortable outright asking for it in their present situation.”
Typically, a bar or restaurant posts signs in women’s rest- rooms to let patrons know they can order an Angel Shot if they need help. Additional terms are sometimes used to communicate more specifically what the customer needs: the shot “neat” or “straight up” signals the customer wants an escort to their car; “on ice” is for a taxi or Uber; and “with lime” or “with a twist” is when the situation has escalated to the point that a call to police is warranted.
