Wine has lost some cachet among young people. Recent studies describe the way millennials perceive wine: elitist, traditional, complex and healthy. Wine makers, particularly makers of Mexican wine, face the great challenge of attracting new generations to the wine world. Campaigns such as tastings and wine tours have been promoted to achieve this goal.
Now, how would you like to go for a walk to the park or to the beach and drink canned wine, from reds, whites, rosés and even sparkling wines? This is possible thanks to Lataland, a new business in Mexico that puts quality wine into cans.
To learn more about Lataland, we talked to Fernanda Gutiérrez Zamora, partner and founder of Lataland. Gutiérrez Zamora is not new to the wine world -- she has a master's degree in Wine Management; she’s a partner of Warda, a design and construction firm for wine cellars; and she served as a judge at the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles 2024 in Guanajuato.
“Lataland is a young company that offers an unusual alternative,” Gutiérrez Zamora says. “Considering that in many events bottled wine is not very accessible both in price and operation, we decided to launch wine in a can. This removes the stigma that wine is only for special occasions, and sets aside the serious and even snobbish protocol that many times those of us who are dedicated to wine do.”
Gutiérrez Zamora acknowledges that canned wine will not appeal to many people accustomed to traditional wine drinking, but she envisions a niche market of people interested in expanding the time and place of their wine drinking.
The Lataland labels are fresh and friendly, and the wines are accessible vintages that consumers can enjoy every day. The idea is to give new generations the opportunity to get to know Mexican wine with a new experience.
Lataland has canned wine in 14 wine labels.
“Our selection of wines in cans brings the best of each style in a practical and modern format,” Gutiérrez Zamora says.
Some of Lataland's labels include:
- Micha Micha - Baja California.
- ScieloMx - Coahuila.
- Oro Blanco - Coahuila.
- Laberinto y Nicole - San Luis Potosí.
- Betty Can - Guanajuato.
- The Wind Effect and Salvaje - Querétaro.
- Irracional - Hidalgo.
