The list of Mexican restaurants in the Boston area continues to grow, as these recent additions to the city’s culinary map show.
First, we congratulate co-owners Abner Gonzalez and Paul Mongui on the debut of Tulum, their Yucatan-inspired restaurant that celebrated its arrival to the East Somerville, Massachusetts dining scene with a Grand Opening on January 19.
The menu, inspired by the cuisine found in Tulum, Mexico, includes dishes like moles, cochinita pibil, plantains, and what Gonzalez called Tulum’s “signature dish… the molcajete served in a bowl made of volcanic rock” in a February 6 feature in Boston Magazine.
“What an incredible journey it has been to get here!” the owners posted on Instagram in anticipation of the Grand Opening. “Tulum has been a dream of ours for quite a while and it's incredibly rewarding and humbling to share this experience with all of you.”
Tulum joins several other Boston area restaurants that recently debuted with menus featuring Mexican/Latin American cuisine.
The Painted Burro, a regional chain that launched its original location in 2012 in Davis Square — announced the opening of its newest location on February 5. “We're SO excited to announce that our Brookline location is reopening TOMORROW, Monday, February 5th at 5pm as the newest location of the Painted Burro!!!” an announcement on the company’s website says. “We've been anxiously waiting to share the news and we can't wait for you to see our newly expanded and renovated space!” That opening follows the debut of The Painted Burro’s location in Harvard Square last November.
Harvard Square also got another new Mexican option when Achilito’s opened its newest location in the Crimson Galeria earlier this year. That location is the fourth for Achilito’s, which also operates restaurants in Jamaica Plain, Brighton, and Foxborough
Also on the horizon: Taco Azul, According to Boston Magazine, restaurateur Dan Leyva is
planning to launch Taco Azul “‘a modern Mexican taco restaurant’ opening first on Beacon Hill, with the Seaport and Cambridge in his sights,” with an anticipated opening in mid-2024.
