On February 14, the MICHELIN Guide announced new additions to its list of Florida restaurants. el Restaurante congratulates the two Latin-themed restaurants on that prestigious list:
Maty's. This Peruvian spot in Miami offers a menu inspired by Chef Valerie Chang’s childhood — in fact, the restaurant is named after her beloved grandmother. Dishes like black grouper, kanpachi and ocean trout “dressed with the likes of aji dulce, kiwiberries, finger limes and passionfruit” are some of the dishes in which “Chang uses quality seafood to deliver bright, citrus-forward Peruvian flavors,” the Guide says. This isn’t the first honor Maty’s has received: Not only was the restaurant named one of Bon Appetit's 24 Best New Restaurants in 2023 and included in the New York Times' Restaurant List; Chang and her brother Nando were the first siblings to be named together to Food & Wine Magazine's coveted Best New Chefs Class of 2023.
Streetlight Taco. Nixtamalizing heirloom corn in house is one of the approaches this Mexican restaurant in South Tampa takes to its menu of tacos, tostadas, salsas and sides that “certainly ups the style quotient on the typical taqueria,” the Guide says. It then offers this advice: “Don't skip the Sunday snack tostada, an equal parts sweet-and-savory delight with two blue corn tostadas layered with cream cheese with lump crab, diced sweet mango and a mango habanero sauce.”
