el Restaurante extends condolences to the family and friends of Socorro Herrera, founder of Yuca’s Restaurant, who passed away peacefully after a brief illness on Dec. 23, 2024. Herrera started Yuca’s in a small hut on Hillhurst Avenue in Los Feliz, California in 1976 and opened a second location in Pasadena in 2017. 1976. At Yuca’s Hut, she was known affectionately as “Mama Yuca’s” to customers, regulars and celebrities alike.
“Socorro Herrera was not just a culinary pioneer who transformed the Mexican food scene in Los Angeles; she was a beacon of passion and generosity, whose big heart touched the lives of everyone she encountered,” the Latino Restaurant Association noted in an online tribute. “Her legacy will forever inspire future generations of chefs and restaurateurs to embrace the richness of our culture with love and authenticity. The Latino Restaurant Association thanks Socorro for her support and never-ending kindness and love. ‘Mama Yuca’s’ will always live in our hearts.”
Among Yuca’s many accolades was the James Beard Foundation Award the restaurant received in 2005 in the America’s Classics category.
