The Latino Restaurant Association (LRA) has issued a statement in response to the recent short lived ban on avocado imports from Mexico into the U.S. The ban was imposed after a USDA inspector in Mexico was threatened after he discovered and refused to certify a shipment of the fruit from the state of Puebla bound for the U.S. Michoacan is currently the only Mexican state certified as pest-free and able to export avocados to the U.S. market.
Statement from Lilly Rocha, Executive Director Latino Restaurant Association:
“The Latino Restaurant Association commends both the Biden Administration and th
e government of Mexico for arriving at a timely solution to ensuring the safety of USDA inspectors in Mexico while keeping the imports of avocados free flowing into the United States to satisfy the country’s increasing demand for the highly popular fruit. This is great news for consumers and Latino owned restaurants.
"The safety of USDA employees making sure Mexican avocados do not carry diseases or pests that would harm U.S. orchards is of paramount importance as is the actual importation of avocados from Mexico. We look forward to a continuing collaboration between both governments to ensure unabated trade of valuable food commodities like avocados between the U.S. and Mexico.”
