During a Feb. 28 webinar entitled “Immigration Update”—sponsored by el Restaurante—attorney Becki L. Young, co-founder of Hammond Young Immigration Law and head of the firm's Hospitality Practice, provided a detailed overview of how Pres. Trump’s Executive Orders (EOs) on immigration are impacting restaurants, particularly those that employ immigrants and refugees.
Cautioning that the situation is fluid in light of the new EO expected to be announced on March 1, Young discussed what happens during a raid by ICE agents; what employers’ rights and responsibilities are during and after a raid; what happens during an I-9 inspection; and guidelines for communicating with employees about how to respond when an ICE agent and/or government inspectors shows up at your door.
Young also provided links to websites that provide important information and resources to restaurateurs. Among the most important: the National Immigration Law Center’s site, where you can download the “Know Your Rights” Flyer in English at https://www.nilc.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/Rights-No-Matter-Who-Is-Pres-2016-11-10.pdf and in Spanish at https://www.nilc.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/Rights-No-Matter-Who-Is-Pres-esp-2016-11-10.pdf).
She ended the hour-long presentation by answering participants’ questions.
