Chicago’s restaurant scene became one star brighter on December 9, when Mexican/Latin-inspired Cariño was honored as the Windy City’s newest Michelin-starred restaurant during an awards ceremony in New York City.
Michelin Guide recognized Chef Norman Fenton's spot in Uptown, which opened in late 2023, as a concept where “a celebration of Mexican cuisine takes place with each dish (think huitlacoche ravioli with fried corn silk and a lamb tartare tostada)” and a “tasting menu features boldness and creativity in spades, starting with “chips and salsa” in the form of salsa verde jelly and a tortilla crumble.”
The restaurant expressed gratitude to Michelin Guide, as well as to the team behind the concept and the diners who have supported Cariño during its inaugural year.
“We are beyond thrilled to have been awarded our first star by the @michelinguide. Congratulations to our entire team for all of their hard work over this past year that has brought Cariño to life! This has truly been a team effort and we wouldn’t be here today without you,” an Instagram post says. "Thank you to everyone who has dined with us and continues to support us into the new year.”
Cariño joins Chef Rick Bayless’ Topolobampo — also a one-star entry — as the only other Mexican/Latin restaurant in Chicago on the list this year.
