Balam Mexican Kitchen in Lynwood, California is a “community gathering place,” according to owner Rosendo "Chendo" Jacquez. And the food is great -- the restaurant won “Best of Show” in the 2018 L.A. TACO's “Taco Madness” event. Now Jacquez is leaning into his community for help after a car smashed into the corner of his restaurant early last week and caused extensive damage.
The accident, possibly caused by cars racing on the street in front of the restaurant, shattered the wall facing the street, broke windows and scattered glass throughout the interior. Surveillance video caught the accident, as can be seen on the restaurant’s Instagram page.
Jacquez has started a GoFundMe page to tap community support for the rebuilding costs. He wrote on his Instagram page:
“The financial burden of rebuilding is substantial, and I find myself in a challenging situation. The restaurant, which has been a source of joy, community, and livelihood for both myself and my dedicated staff, now requires significant funds for reconstruction. Your generous donation will not only help restore this cherished establishment but will also support the livelihoods of those who depend on it.”
The Latino Restaurant Association is supporting Jacquez’s efforts by asking members to contribute.
“Let us come together as a community to support our fellow member during this difficult time,” wrote LRA CEO Lilly Rocha in an email to members. “Your generosity and solidarity will make a significant difference in helping Balam Mexican Kitchen recover and continue serving our community with their delicious cuisine.”
