Fonda San Miguel in Austin, which will celebrate its 50th birthday next year, is opening a new venue that will serve regional Mexican breakfast and lunch specialties. The venue, named Tzintzuntzan, was designed by internationally recognized architectural firm Miró Rivera Architects.
“It’s long been our aspiration to expand the scope of what Fonda provides its patrons for dinner by creating a new space where our menu offerings would be extended to include regional Mexican dishes for desayuno y almuerzo, along with extraordinary items from a genuine panadería,” says Fonda San Miguel owner Tom Gilliland. “Watching as our dreams are realized, thanks to Juan Miró and his team at Miró Rivera Architects, allows us to seal Fonda San Miguel’s legacy as the innovator of authentic Mexican food.”
Tzintzuntzan (pronounced zin-zoon-zhan) will open in March 2025 adjacent to Fonda San Miguel. The name means “place of hummingbirds” and comes from a pre-Colombian archeological site in the Mexican state of Michoacán.
The design allows the two restaurants to operate independently. A patio and garden provide a natural compatibility and flow between the two venues for expanded use as desired. Lead architect Juan Miró describes it best saying, “A memorable space that is connected to a communal activity is one of the best things that humans can do because it’s where we feel that connection … as humans.”
An official introduction of Tzintzuntzan will take place at Fonda San Miguel on September 15th, 2024, from 11 am – 1 pm. Guests will sample menu items from Tzintzuntzan as they celebrate Mexican Independence Day, also known as “El Diezyseis,” September 16th.
Fonda San Miguel will also kick-off National Hispanic Heritage Month and the beginning of special events marking the restaurant’s 50th anniversary in 2025.
Tickets to the event are available at TRIBEZA. Read more about Tzintzuntzan, it’s architectural design, and the authentic menu offerings in the September/October TRIBEZA issue available September 1st.
About Fonda San Miguel
Fonda San Miguel was founded in Austin, TX by Tom Gilliland and Miguel Ravago in 1975. It was the first restaurant in Texas to focus exclusively on authentic regional cuisine from Mexico's interior culinary epicenters: Oaxaca, Puebla, Veracruz, and Yucatan. The restaurant features Gilliland's carefully curated collection of museum-quality artwork, exotic plants, and international decor. With the dual focus of food and art, Fonda San Miguel flourished, and their long-range impact on Mexican food in Texas and the United States has garnered national and international acclaim.
