Chicago is rich with Mexican and Latin restaurants located in every neighborhood. And it just became even richer with the debut of six new entries on the culinary scene:
Adoro Fusion Kitchen + Bar Located in the gentrifying Humboldt Park neighborhood, Adoro is “a unique culinary experience that fuses the rich tradition of Mexican cuisine with exciting international flavors… where the music, colorful décor and enticing aroma of the food instantly transport you to the streets of Mexico.” It’s a journey on which customers will discover dishes like Octopus Chicharrón, Esquites with Avocado, a variety of tacos, and main dishes like the Salmon Marinado with mashed plantains, avocado salsa and roasted onions.
Istmo Executive Chef Carlos Lopez Munoz’s online introduction sums up what customers will discover at this new Oaxacan restaurant in the Lakeview neighborhood: ““Bringing Oaxaca to Chicago is like sharing a piece of my heart. Through Istmo, I aim to convey the passion, tradition and soul of my homeland, offering each guest a taste of its rich culinary heritage.” Dishes include iconic staples of Oaxacan cuisine including chilaquiles, garnachas, and huevo en salsa now served for lunch and dinner, with a dinner menu coming soon.
Joy Chicago This new Latin American fusion concept in Logan Square offers dishes from Executive Chef Esteban Garcia that are inspired by the cuisines of Ecuador, Mexico, Spain, and Italy — think grilled sirloin flank steak, empanadas, parmigiana, and vegetarian paella, all prepared with a healthy, modern twist.
Mariscos San Pedro Sustainably sourced seafood dishes including ceviche, aguachile, seafood tostadas, camarones, mussles, scallops, whole fish and more is the calling card for this Pilsen neighborhood restaurant from the team behind the city’s popular Taqueria Chingón.
Santa Masa Tamaleria. Born as a temporary takeout tamale shop during the pandemic, this tamaleria recently reappeared as a permanent brick-and-mortar restaurant in the Dunning neighborhood. From 7 a.m. ‘til 7 p.m., owners Danny Espinoza and Jhoana Ruiz serve a menu that includes tamales, huaraches, enchiladas, tacos, and weekend-only pozole more (some made with Santo Chorizo, Espinoza’s signature Chorizo Verde).
Vela. “Inspired by the cultural richness and vibrancy of Mexico City,” this Mexican restaurant and bar and in the trendy River North neighborhood offers a menu that ranges from botanas like empanadas to main dishes like the Langostinos a la Plancha featuring grilled prawns flavored with classic beurre blanc sauce and chile-and-nut matcha verde salsa. Tortillas made in-house with imported Mexican corn are a highlight.
