When Jon Ellis, franchise owner of Taco Tico in Laremore, Okla., learned the building that houses the restaurant he’s worked at for 40 years was for sale, he was shocked — and afraid.
“A lot of people think since I'm the franchise owner that I own the building — I don't," Ellis told Ellis told Fox 23 News in a story posted on September 17. "I had no idea it was for sale until a customer showed me the ad on their phone. I called the owner and he said, 'well, I guess you'll be out of a job.'"
Ellis, who is nearing retirement, has no lease in place on the property. So, he’s done the only thing he can think of to keep Taco Tico going: After selling many of his own assets to raise capital, he hesitantly started a GoFundMe campaign to help him buy the building.
He explains the situation in the Save Taco Tico Claremore GoFundMe campaign this way:
“As the owner and franchisee, I’ve dedicated 40 years of my life to this restaurant, and I’ve seen firsthand how much it means to our customers. People travel over 100 miles just to enjoy our food, and many share stories of family traditions and memories made at Taco Tico. At one time, there were over 100 Taco Tico locations nationwide, but now only 22 remain, with Claremore being one of just two in Oklahoma. Our restaurant is a gathering place for friends, families, and longtime staff who have become like family over the years.
“Recently, the property owner put our building up for sale, and there’s a buyer interested in tearing down Taco Tico. I’m determined to save our restaurant and keep this piece of local history alive. The funds raised will go directly toward the down payment needed to purchase the building and secure Taco Tico’s future in Claremore. By helping us, you’re not just saving a business—you’re preserving a beloved community landmark and the memories that come with it. Your support will ensure that Taco Tico continues to serve great food and bring people together for years to come.”
Ellis said the community has been “incredibly supportive,” with customers donating online and in person. To help a fellow restaurateur, you can make a donation to the fund here.
