Nearly everyone loves tacos, but who loves them so much that they can eat a record number? A new event sponsored by Taco Cabana aims to find out.
The Taco Cabana World Taco Eating Championship will feature professional competitive eaters and regular folks trying to break the Guinness World Record for taco eating. The event, scheduled for September 20 in San Antonio, Texas, will be observed by an official Guinness World Record judge who can certify the record, if it’s broken. (The current record is 126 tacos eaten in 8 minutes, set by competitive eater Joey Chestnut in 2017.)
Competitors will have 10 minutes to consume as many Taco Cabana Bean and Cheese Tacos as possible. They also will be competing for a share of a $10,000 purse.
“Our iconic Bean and Cheese Tacos have been a fan-favorite for decades, and now they’re taking center stage to help us reinforce what has made Taco Cabana a beloved dining destination for nearly half a century,” said Ulyses Camacho, President and COO of Taco Cabana, in a press release. “As we recognize 47 years in business, we are proud to unveil a one-of-a-kind spectacle that’s unlike anything we’ve ever done before – a celebration that features world-class eaters, the electric thrill of a Guinness World Record attempt and the kind of global exposure that takes Taco Cabana to new heights.”

Coincidentally, the event comes on the heels of a record-breaking taco event in Nuevo Leon, Mexico. At the La Discada Festival on June 21, a team of 100 culinary students used a 23-foot diameter frying pan to prepare a stir-fry dish called la discada, which contains sausage, beef, pork, bacon, tomatoes, peppers, onions and beer. They used the stir fry to make and serve 13,215 tacos in one hour. The event earned the team three Guinness records: Most tacos served in an hour, largest frying pan, and largest stir-fry.
