Philanthropy.
It’s a word people seem to throw around a lot these days, often without really considering what it means— not only to themselves but to the efforts in which they’re engaging. Is writing a check or making an online donation a philanthropic effort? Or does it require more than a one-and-done financial contribution to a cause or organization?
I honestly hadn’t given the topic as much thought as it deserves until I started working on this issue, which features articles that tell the story of philanthropy in different but equally important ways:
In Five Questions, we explore the evolution of the Aarón Sánchez Impact Fund and explain how this celebrity chef has transformed his success into a program (now part of the Emeril Lagasse Foundation) that has awarded over $2 million in culinary arts scholarships and other grants to uplift the lives of Latino youth through food.
In our cover story, Tempting Tortas, we look at how Los Angeles-based Cuernavaca’s restaurant turned its opportunity to sell tortas at FIFA Fan Fest into a potential game-changing opportunity for a local panadería by hiring them to make soccer-themed bread for the 40,000 tortas needed to meet demand throughout the World Cup.
And in our Business Basics story, we delve into best practices for giving back — ways to help others while boosting goodwill with current and prospective customers.
We didn’t set out to make this a “feel-good” issue — but we’re glad it turned into one. And we’re grateful to be sharing so many positive stories in these challenging times.
