You have to admit, Chipotle is pretty good at tapping into trends for its marketing. The giant chain’s latest move is to create a set of Halloween costumes based on some goofy memes that circulated on social media.
According to a press release, two years ago the burrito restaurant posted fictional images of costumes that kind of look like a Chipotle fork and a Chipotle napkin. These memes evidently attracted 700,000 social engagements, so the company thinks people actually want to dress like a fork or a napkin for Halloween this year. They partnered with ubiquitous costume pop-up store Spirit Halloween to make those costumes, plus three others: Chipotle Water Cup, Burrito and Take-out Bag.
"Our popular Halloween tradition, Boorito, began with a burrito-themed costume contest and now we're taking it to the next level with the launch of our first-ever costume collection in collaboration with Spirit Halloween," said Chris Brandt, chief brand officer at Chipotle in the press release.
Starting September 6, the five-costume collection will be available online and at select Spirit Halloween retail locations in Chicago, Denver, Egg Harbor Township, N.J., Los Angeles, and New York, while supplies last.
So if some kids come to your door this Halloween dressed like forks or burritos, you can assume they are just following social media-driven fads, not actually promoting Chipotle.
