Mexican restaurants sell millions of bottles of Corona each year. The crisp lager brewed by Grupo Modelo in Mexico goes with tacos, burritos and just about every other menu item.
But how much money are restaurants making from the brew? Research by el Restaurante magazine reveals that menu prices of Corona vary greatly from restaurant to restaurant. The research examined 59 menus from Mexican restaurants that sell Corona and found the cheapest – $3.95 – at Grande Sunrise in Minneapolis. The most expensive was $14 at La Santa Taqueria in Miami. The average cost was $6.75.
“Beer is a great profit maker for Mexican restaurants,” notes Ed Avis, publisher of el Restaurante. “Anyone can buy a six pack of Corona at the grocery store for less than a single bottle at some restaurants, but the experience of drinking a cold beer in a fun Mexican restaurant is totally worth it.”
The research looked at menus from Mexican restaurants in 13 metropolitan areas, running from Boston to Los Angeles. No city stood out as particularly expensive – the average price for a bottle of Corona in each city varied by only a dollar or two across the country.
