As President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown started to unfold, members of the restaurant industry throughout the country expressed outrage and fear about what the raids would do to their employees, their families, and their businesses as a whole.
On February 3, many of those restaurants took action by participating in a ‘Day Without Immigrants’, shuttering their businesses to express their solidarity with the immigrants and to highlight the critical role they play not only in the restaurant industry but also in the entire U.S. economy.
In the Chicago suburb of Berwyn, Illinois, El Nuevo Vallarta closed, posting this message on its Facebook page: “We are proud to stand in solidarity with A Day Without Immigrants and will be closed on Monday, February 3rd. Our family, friends, and team are the heart of everything we do—by lifting each other up, we grow stronger together.”
In Houston, TJ Birria Y Mas, Cochinita & Co, and Space City Birria closed, as TJ Birria & Mas noted, “in solidarity with and love for our community."
And in Salem Oregon, popular spots including Garibaldi Mexican Restaurant, Los Dos Amigos, and Nachos Locos Mexican Restaurant participated in the ‘Day Without Immigrants’ protest.
Those are just a fraction of the restaurants that shuttered for the day in response to the immigration situation playing out in cities and towns nationwide.
