September and October have been big months on the restaurant scene in Austin, with three new spots joining the very robust roster of Mexican restaurants in this Texas city that ranked No. 4 overall as best US city for food and drinks in Food & Wine Magazine’s 2024 Global Tastemakers Awards.
Con Vista al Mar. Austin is the first American outpost of this Mexican restaurant that has been described as one of Mexico City’s essential taquerias. According to Eater Austin, “The restaurant is all about coastal Mexican dishes and seafood, including tacos made with shrimp longanisa and pork rinds; burritos stuffed with smoked swordfish and octopus; and Tostitos served with Sinaloan-styled ceviche.” Co-partner and executive Irak Roaro is the chef behind the concept.
Tómalo Grill and Santa Catarina. The Infatuation Austin dubbed these new Mexican spots as two “openings that seem like they have the most potential.” Tómalo, once just a taco takeout window, has blossomed into a sit-down restaurant with “riffs on classic Mexican street foods, with dishes like coconut shrimp aguachile and cauliflower steak al pastor.” And in good news for taco lovers, the window is still an option.
Santa Catarina’s new Cherrywood – Manor Road location joins this small chain’s two other restaurants — one in Cedar Park and another in Austin. The menu features what the website describes as “interior and coastal favorites” including Rellenos (en Nogada, de Mariscos, de Huitlacoche and de Esquites varieties), plus enchiladas, tacos, fajitas, salads and more.
