Texas restaurant owners will enjoy a parade of the best wines from Mexico during a five-city wine tour organized by La Competencia Imports. The tour begins May 3 and includes events in Austin, Houston, San Antonio, Fort Worth and Dallas.
“The goal is to promote and create awareness to Mexican wine and its increased availability in Texas,” says Tomas Bracamontes, owner of La Competencia, which is located in Napa, California and specializes in wines from Mexico. Bracamontes says two Texas distributors, RNDC and Serendipity, are supporting the tour.
The tour includes a combination of tastings, meals and trade-oriented events. Among the wineries that will be represented are Bodegas Henri Lurton, Palafox, Tres Raices, Casa Jipe, De Cote, Guaname, Llano Colorado and others.
“These events require a significant investment in both time and effort but we firmly believe that they are the most effective way of building strong brands in the U.S.,” Bracamontes says.
Two-Part Event in Fort Worth
Don Artemio Mexican Heritage, a restaurant in Fort Worth with an extensive focus on wines from Mexico, is hosting the tour on May 8 with two events. From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. the restaurant will feature a wine tasting featuring 45 wines from 15 wineries and five Mexico wine regions. They are touting the event as “The Largest Mexican Wine Tasting.”
Adrian Burciaga, co-owner and general manager of Don Artemio, says he expects about 100 guests at the tasting. Attendees will include people from the wine trade, including owners/chefs of other restaurants, and the public.
“This will be a potential opportunity to introduce and connect people with the wines and the winemakers themselves,” Burciaga says.
The second part of the Don Artemio event is a reception and seven-course wine dinner in the evening. Each course will be paired with a different wine from Mexico. The dinner will be a ticketed event for $150 plus tax and gratuity. A maximum of 110 tickets will be made available. To make reservations at either event at Don Artemio, email events@donartemio.us or call 817-470-1439.
“I know Mexican wine is a new thing in the U.S., but they've been making wine for a long time in many regions in Mexico,” Burciaga says. “The reason we have not been exposed in the U.S. is because most of those wineries are still very small production. We are encouraging them to present their wines to the U.S. market, and this event is an opportunity to learn about the Mexican wines that are available close to our communities.”
Registration Open - Trade Only
Restaurant professionals interested in the events in any of the cities can still register. The events are free to those in the trade. Click the links below for information about the event in each city and to register. Note: This is for the restaurant professionals only, not consumers.
