In the land of agave, amid smoky aromas and ancestral tales, a new collaboration is born: Mundo Mezcal, a festival that pays tribute not only to a drink, but to an entire cultural universe woven together by artisan hands, Mexican soil, and community spirit.
On June 5 in Mexico City, the headquarters of the Ministry of Economy became the starting point for a journey that promises to change the way mezcal is experienced and understood. With federal and state authorities, producers, traditional cooks, and specialists in attendance, Mundo Mezcal, Festival del Agave, Tierra y Sazón was officially presented, an event that promises to be the largest of its kind in the world.
A ritual of identity, land, and flavor
Mezcal is not just a drink, it is fire and patience, it is heritage distilled, and under this philosophy, Mundo Mezcal is projected as an unprecedented festival that will bring together more than 600 exhibitors and 7,000 attendees on November 1 and 2, 2025, at the iconic Campo Marte, at the foot of Chapultepec Forest.
The Secretary of Economic Development of Mexico City, Manola Zabalza Aldama, said
“We are in the month of pride, and what better time to feel proud of building, together with the mezcal masters, a fair industry without intermediaries. We are not only celebrating the drink, but also human labor, sustainability, and fair access to the value of an industry that today generates more than 265,000 jobs in Mexico.”
The Mundo Mezcal experience
The festival will offer a multisensory experience with more than 30 tastings, conferences, workshops, gastronomic and interactive areas, and a Mezcal Wall with 369 labels from different regions of the country. It will be a journey through the aromas and nuances of agave, from the lands of Oaxaca to the valleys of San Luis Potosí, passing through Michoacán, Durango, Guerrero, and more.
Lala Noguera, agave distillate specialist and ambassador for the event, sums it up this way:
“Here we will learn about the richness of the entire production chain. When the farmer and the entrepreneur work together, an unstoppable force is born.”
Voices that cross territories
The presentation brought together delegations from across the country and sparked interest from states such as Campeche, which are looking to learn from the mezcal economic model.
“It's not just a product, but a narrative, a mystique. We want to understand how, from a seed, an entire local economy can be transformed,” shared Jorge Luis Lavalle Maury, Secretary of Economic Development for Campeche.
For his part, Placido Hernández of Pioneros del Mezcal and creator of Espina Dorada, reminded us of a powerful truth:
“Although mezcal is still in the hands and arms of the producer, we have a long way to go. Mundo Mezcal is an event where you can feel the spirit of mezcal.”
A symbol of the future
Today, with 14% annual growth in exports, mezcal is a rising star in foreign trade.
But it also faces challenges: the overexploitation of agave, the loss of traditional practices, and an industry that is growing by leaps and bounds.
Mundo Mezcal stands as a response. An invitation to connect with our roots, celebrate the present, and imagine a future where agave is not just a product, but a symbol of resilience, innovation, and community.
