There’s no shortage of great Mexican- and Latin-inspired restaurants in the greater Chicagoland area — and the selection expanded this month with new openings joining the culinary scene.
The first week in May brought Casa Chi, a cocktail-forward concept from celebrity Chef Richard Sandoval. Located in the InterContinental Hotel on Michigan Avenue on the Magnificent Mile, the restaurant is a Nikkei lounge where Sandoval blends Peruvian and Latin American flavors with Japanese techniques presented as small plates cooked tableside on hot stones because there is no kitchen in the restaurant.
Mid-May saw the debut of CocoBar on the city’s popular Riverwalk. The menu features tacos, burritos, tostadas, nachos, homemade salsas, and fresch ceviche, plus a full bar and cocktail menu with over 50 margarita options! Diners opting for a quick bite to go will find “walkables” including esquites, quesadillas, and “walking tacos.” Owners and sisters Leticia and Erika Espinosa also own the nearby Colores Mexicanos: Chicago's Mexican Gift Shop.
To round out the month, the second Chicago area location of Chef Rick Bayless’ Tortazo — a torteria featuring a menu of Mexico City-style sandwiches, plus soups, salads and snacks — will debut within the Westfield Old Orchard’s shopping center with a Grand Opening on May 25. The other location is in the Willis Tower in Chicago’s Loop.
