On Friday, June 20, representatives from One Fair Wage and Presente.org celebrated the relaunch of Solidarity Restaurants, a national network protect immigrant restaurant workers, during a campaign kickoff at Bistro Casa Azul in New York City. The national campaign is designed to unite businesses that are stepping up to protect immigrant workers facing Trump’s renewed ICE raids, wage theft, and looming Medicaid cuts.
The goal is two-fold: to respond to the current crisis and to build long-term power through fair wages, safe workplaces, and a public commitment to worker rights.
“Restaurant workers are being squeezed from every side — from poverty wages to threats of deportation to cuts in the programs they rely on to survive,” said Saru Jayaraman, president of One Fair Wage, in a release announcing the event. “Solidarity Restaurants are standing together to say: Enough. We will not be silent, and we will not stand by. We will defend the workers who keep this industry running.”
Solidarity Restaurants are foodservice businesses that publicly commit to supporting restaurant workers, not only in the face of ICE raids, but also amid impending cuts to Medicaid, SNAP, and other essential services. They are stepping up by offering fair wages and dignified working conditions; harassment-free environments for staff and customers; legal resources and rapid response support; and a public-facing commitment to restaurant worker rights.
