Tortillas are omnipresent in Mexican cuisine, but they’re usually some shade of brown or tan. Now customers at Illegal Pete’s, a Denver-based Mexican restaurant with 15 locations, can enjoy something much more colorful: tie-dyed tortillas.
The special tortillas are the result of a partnership with Meow Wolf, an immersive art installation in Denver.
“Over the past year we have been working to bring you the ultimate collaboration between two of Colorado’s favorite brands,” the restaurant wrote in an email to customers. “We have a passion for the arts and a desire to bring the community the most memorable experience. So, partnering with Meow Wolf just made sense. We had the unique opportunity to step outside the box and shock our fans with something they have never seen before. A tie dye burrito!”
Pete Turner, founder of Illegal Pete’s, told community newsweekly Westword that he was a little intimidated to work with Meow Wolf at first, but he’s happy how it turned out.
“It's fucking rad," Turner said in Westword’s article. "We couldn't say no. It is a little risky, and it could fall flat. But it sounds fun as shit, and we're gonna do it right.”
The multi-colored tortillas are made by the restaurant’s normal supplier, Colorado Tortilla, using natural dyes from fruits and vegetables. The restaurant calls the tortillas “Portillas,” as in “little portals” (Meow Wolf calls the transitions between its art-filled spaces “portals”). They will be available at all Illegal Pete’s locations through August.
The collaboration between Illegal Pete’s and Meow Wolf extends beyond the funky tortillas. They also created a weird video that combines the burrito-eating experience with Meow Wolf’s brand of deeply felt art. Check out the video below.
