The James Beard Awards are best known for honoring chefs and restaurants, but media get their day, too. In the 2023 awards, three of the winners are Mexican/Latin-related:
Masienda Presents: This video series produced by Masienda, the heirloom corn company, highlights stories about masa and the people who use it. The series won the James Beard Media Award in the Commercial category. Click here to watch an episode on Youtube.
Illyanna Maisonet: This writer and food columnist won the Emerging Voice award for her “deeply personal” cookbook about Puerto Rican cuisine, Diasporican: A Puerto Rican Cookbook (2022 Ten Speed Press).
Mi Cocina: Recipes and Rapture from My Kitchen in Mexico: A Cookbook, by Rick Martínez, won the book award in the International category. The book is described as “A highly personal love letter to the beauty and bounty of México in more than 100 transportive recipes.”
