Oakland, CA (July 15, 2015) --- La Borinqueña Mex-icatessen and Specialty Shop will end operations at the close of business on Friday, July 31, 2015. Family owned and operated, the Ramos/Esquivil family will close the Mexican American restaurant and shop in operation since 1944. La Borinqueña will continue normal operations through the end of the month of July. Tina Tamale Catering and Special Events will also cease operations this summer.
“I’m really proud of what we have done with La Borinqueña over four generations and how our loyal customers, friends and families enjoyed our food crafted from our founder Mama Rosa Lopez’s recipes,” said co-owner and spokesperson Tina Tamale Ramos. “After 71 years of business, our family has chosen to retire from the restaurant industry. We have enjoyed our time as independent shopkeepers in the area known as the Old West Oakland Neighborhood, the timing is now right for us to make a transition and focus on individual endeavors.”
La Borinqueña Mex-icatessen and Specialty Shop is Oakland’s longest continuously family-owned and operated Mexican food store.
"We have had an amazing run and are very lucky to have had a great staff, many of whom have been with us for decades," Ramos added. "Our family extends a huge thank you to them and to everyone who has allowed our family business to be a part of everyday meals to milestone events. We recognize all the relationships both personal and professional that have shaped us as members of our community and will now become part of the history of the original Latino barrio in West Oakland.”
