Four Mexican/Latin-inspired restaurants were honored during Restaurant Association of Metropolitan Washington’s 42nd annual RAMMY awards gala at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center on Sunday, July 21. Those recognized as among the D.C. area’s best include:
*Favorite Gathering Place: Mi Vida
Customers gather at Mi Vida locations in District Wharf, 14th Street, and Penn Quarter for a menu from Chef Roberto Santibañez that’s “rooted in the history and culinary tradition of Mexico while exploring the ever-changing boundaries of this vibrant and evolving cuisine.”
*Hottest Sandwich Shop: Colada Shop
Born from a love of the Cuban coffee tradition, “with the goal spreading the Cuban coffee and social tradition to the DC community,” Colada Shop has multiple stores in the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia (DMV) that offer a “Caribbean experience” with a menu of coffees, batidos, cocktails, breakfast fare, bowls, soups, salads, sandwiches and more.
*Casual Restaurant of the Year: La Famosa
With La Famosa, chef/owner Joancarlo Parkhurst has introduced diners to the “soulful Puerto Rican cooking” he grew up watching his grandmother make in Puerto Rico to Washington, DC’s Navy Yard neighborhood.
*Formal Fine Dining Restaurant of the Year: Causa/Amazonia
This dual-concept restaurant brings together the best of coastal Peruvian and Andean cuisine in two unique spaces: Causa, “a Peruvian tasting odyssey curated by the acclaimed Chef Carlos Delgado, guiding guests on a culinary exploration of Peru's coastline and the Andes mountains” and Amazonia, the upstairs bar and rooftop.
