Tacos Tequila Whiskey, a Denver restaurant with two locations, is doing their own version of the 12 days of Christmas by offering a different tamal each day for the dozen days leading to the holiday. This is the fifth year for the promo.
“We started with a weekly Tamale Tuesday to separate ourselves from the Taco Tuesday market,” reports Kevin Morrison, founder of the restaurant. “It was such a success we decided to put our twist on the 12 Days of Christmas song.”
Morrison says they choose the 12 tamales by selecting a few of their top sellers from the Tamale Tuesday specials, and then add in a few new options developed by kitchen staff. All back of house staff give their input, and final decisions are made by the kitchen manager at each location.
Among this year’s dozen are tamales filled with Chili Colorado, Picadillo de Res, Pedro’s Pipian and Cerdo Mole. Morrison says the restaurant makes 100 tamales each day, plus another 100 for pre-orders. The promotion has grown each year just by word of mouth, he adds.
Part of the experience is that kitchen staff interact with the guests when they serve the tamales.
“We really get to showcase our kitchen staff and get them in front of the guests,” Morrison explains. “It’s cool to see how excited they get interacting with the guests and doing photo ops with the guests. It is obvious our staff are very proud about sharing their culture and flavors.”
