On Monday, June 16, Chicago hosted the James Beard Foundation’s 2025 James Beard Awards celebration at the Lyric Opera. We were thrilled to learn that Karyn Tomlinson of Myriel in St. Paul, Minnesota — a chef we featured in our May/June story on local sourcing and in the corresponding webinar on that topic — was honored as Best Chef: Midwest (IA, KS, MN, MO, NE, ND, SD, WI). We extend our congratulations to Chef Tomlinson and to these winners from Mexican/Latin-inspired restaurants:

Identidad Cocktail Bar, San Juan, Puerto Rico — a bar with a menu of national and international cocktails that incorporate flavors that characterize Caribbean and Latin cuisine

Carlos Delgado, Causa and Amazonia, Washington, D.C. — a dual-concept restaurant features coastal Peruvian and Andean cuisine in Causa (the tasting experience) and Amazonia (the upstairs bar and rooftop)
Best Chef: Mountain (CO, ID, MT, UT, WY)
Salvador Alamilla, Amano, Caldwell, Idaho — a restaurant that the website says is “dedicated to uplifting the food and beverages of the Mexican diaspora through ancestral cooking methods, sustainability, and support of indigenous communities that are guardians of the agave”
Best Chef: Texas
Thomas Bille, Belly of the Beast, Spring, Texas — an establishment featuring New American cuisine prepared through the perspective of a Mexican-American chef
