Seven aid workers with World Central Kitchen, the food aid organization established by Spanish chef Jose Andres, were killed on Monday while providing aid in Gaza. The organization is immediately stopping operations in Gaza following the deaths.
Among the dead are a U.S.-Canadian dual citizen, people from Australia, Poland and the UK, and at least one Palestinian worker.
World Central Kitchen had coordinated its efforts with the Israili authorities and the group that was fired upon was traveling in a zone that had been considered “deconflicted.” The group was traveling in two armored cars with the World Central Kitchen logo and had just unloaded 100 tons of food aid that was brought in through the maritime route.
“This is not only an attack against WCK, this is an attack on humanitarian organizations showing up in the most dire of situations where food is being used as a weapon of war. This is unforgivable,” said World Central Kitchen CEO Erin Gore in a statement on the organization's website.
On X, Chef Andres posted: “Today @WCKitchen lost several of our sisters and brothers in an IDF air strike in Gaza. I am heartbroken and grieving for their families and friends and our whole WCK family. These are people…angels…I served alongside in Ukraine, Gaza, Turkey, Morocco, Bahamas, Indonesia. They are not faceless…they are not nameless. The Israeli government needs to stop this indiscriminate killing. It needs to stop restricting humanitarian aid, stop killing civilians and aid workers, and stop using food as a weapon. No more innocent lives lost. Peace starts with our shared humanity. It needs to start now.”
