Expo Comida a disappointment

Compared to the first year Expo Comida Latina was co-located with WFHE in San Diego a few years ago, and the following year in Los Angeles, the last two years have been genuine disappointments. Mostly small companies with no US distribution but "looking for distributors". Few of the products I've encountered and would be interested in using in my catering operation have ever come to market in the US. Even those companies whose products are available in Mexico and could be shipped to the US fail to respond to inquiries by mail, email, or phone.

The one product I could really use -- the best refried beans I have ever tasted: Dona Cele's -- still, after three years, is not being packed in foodservice quantities (#10 cans). To have to buy more than 6 #303 cans to equal one #10 is too costly and creates a horrible waste factor. Why even bother to exhibit a product to the foodservice industry, if you are not going to package your product for that segment?

This year's ECL was the smallest of the four I've attended, and offered the least in the way of innovation or excitement. I was truly disappointed. Unless Urban Expositions does a much better job of attracting exhibitors, the ECL will pass very quietly into oblivion.

Even the WFHE has diminished in importance and size over the past 7 or 8 years -- didn't even make it into the South Hall at the LA Convention Center this year. Many exhibitors who have been consistent attendees in years past were missed this year.

And, finally, a return to the original Saturday, Sunday, Monday show schedule would be far more attractive to me and many other regular attendees than Sunday, Monday, Tuesday.

Just food for thought.
