Chef Danny Mena of Sembrado in Manhattan.
Now one of Mexico’s most festive holidays, Mexican Independence Day is marked with celebrations, food, drink, and camaraderie. At the new Mexico City-style restaurant Sembrado in Manhattan’s East Village, Chef Danny Mena has created special Grito De Dolores cocktails, bold flavorful Mezcal libations that inspire a shout! In true Mexican tradition - as the President of Mexico does yearly to mark the occasion on the night of the 15th - patrons will be encouraged to shout out the traditional triple ¡Viva Mexico! after downing the drinks named in honor of Mexican revolutionary heroes.
Sembrado’s independence day cocktail menu will include the Viva Hidalgo, made with fresh tamarind, Combier, and Mezcal Peloton de la Muerte – 100% pure silver Oaxaca mescal named after the insurgent group that set out to avenge Father Hidalgo’s death; the Viva Allende – clericot, Mexico’s most popular mixed drink, a sangria made of red wine, apples and brandy; Viva Morelos – pulque made from cured agave sap, peanuts, and tequila; and Viva Mexico, a classic bandera 3-shot cocktail – Fidencio Clasico Mezcal, fresh lime juice, and the spicy house sangrita.
